It seems the nominees are in for the "Hatchet Job of the Year" award, presented to the "angriest, funniest, most trenchant review published in a newspaper or magazine." Literary website The Omnivore started the award last year, but I have to think they're somewhat missing their mark. You want a book review that's as funny and insightful as it is angry, you want to look on the internet, where the reviewer has more freedom without the constraints of print. Sadly, though, online reviewers don't have the same air of legitimacy, even though I've come across far more insights and far less pandering from that crew than the ones who write in newspapers and magazines.
